EcoSpark at Inspiredu
Inspiredu is a Georgia-based non-profit working to bridge the gaps in device ownership, digital literacy, and digital access by providing Georgia’s most marginalized and vulnerable citizens with the devices and training they need to become a part of the global internet community. In previous years we have provided thousands of Georgia families with a free home learning center and the training to use it. Our EcoSpark program is a three-pronged approach to collect donations of laptops and other equipment, refurbish those devices to extend their life cycle, and safely recycle unusable equipment. We rely on donations from companies and individuals to provide the devices we distribute. Keep reading to find out how you can help!
The Recycle to Repurpose portion focuses on refurbishing and extending the lifecycle of devices that have been graciously donated by corporations and individuals.
The Donate2Educate has transformed donated devices into Home Learning Centers and distributes them to local families, community-based organizations and students. In 2024, we served 2,445 families in the state of Georgia. This fundraising campaign ties into our Learning Spark Initiative, providing equitable access to technology and training.
The Sustainability prong includes collaborating and working with the community to get devices through e-drives to collect electronic waste from your neighborhood to keep a clean and sustainable environment. Inspiredu recycled 247,800 pounds of e-waste in 2024 that had reached the end of its life cycle in an environmentally friendly manner, keeping e-waste out of our landfills.

pounds of e-waste diverted from Atlanta landfills. The world produces 53.6 million metric tons of waste from discarded electronics every year. In our landfills, e-waste leaks mercury, cadmium, lead, beryllium, arsenic, and other contaminants into our soil and water.

Computers and laptops have been commonly used in homes and businesses for over two decades. Many people are unsure what to do with old devices and equipment once they purchase new ones. By donating to Inspiredu, you can rest assured that your sensitive information will be wiped and that your equipment will help a family in need or be properly recycled.
-
Laptops and computers last on average anywhere between 3 years (business computers) to 5+ years (personal computers), meaning that by now, most people have previously enjoyed devices they don’t know what to do with.
-
It’s risky to discard your previously enjoyed laptop yourself when buying a new computer. Without professional help to wipe the device, some personal data stored on it could be at risk.
This is one of the many reasons that people just let old devices sit unused in the closet, attics, and garages.
-
It just seems wrong to many people to throw away a device that cost so much to begin with. Even though they’re not sure how the laptop could be used in the future, it just seems so wasteful to destroy it.
We created a seamless process to recycle computers and other electronics in Georgia, and we have made the process easy and safe.
-
Most times when a person upgrades to a new laptop, their previous device can be repurposed and may still have some usable life left. While the device has already been replaced in your home or business, perhaps someone else, like our underserved learners, could benefit from that old one.
-
Because of all the different places data can hide on a device, many people hold on to old laptops because they’re afraid they won’t wipe the laptop completely and may leave behind some personal data.
Our team at Inspiredu knows the struggle people have over what to do with those previously enjoyed devices. They don’t want to be wasteful yet they want to make sure the device is totally cleaned of their data.
We have the perfect solution that allows you a professional wipe for free and the satisfaction of donating your computer to a good cause.
-
Not all families have the resources to purchase a laptop or device for themselves or their children.
You can help by donating your previously enjoyed laptops!

Inspiredu technicians wipe the data using Active KillDisk professional, which is a D.O.D certified utility software to securely overwrite data over the hard drive, destroy all partitions, and any unused disk space. If we are unable to wipe the data, then the hard drives are shredded.
-
After your device is wiped, or shredded, we provide a certificate of data destruction and a donation letter as a receipt of proof so you can be assured that all your data is wiped clean. If you have any questions, please email us at info@iuatl.org
