Our first Adult Digital Literacy workshop of 2023
Last month, we held our first Community Adult Digital Literacy workshop at the Inspiredu Volunteer and Training Center in our Comcast Lift Zone. This program expands our Adult Digital Literacy Initiative to all our community partners and the adults they serve.
Bi-monthly, we invite adult learners seeking to improve their children’s academic success or add digital literacy to their career skills to attend our workshops, and by doing so they earn a refurbished laptop for their household. Throughout the course, participants gain valuable computer and software skills and learn how to use technology in everyday life.
During this workshop, the 23 class members discovered our 8-Tech ‘Commandments’ comprising the three M’s, manage, maintain, and monitor. These recommendations mainly focus on caring for and supporting their new laptops. We taught them basic computer skills, and the level of class participation inspired our trainers. The class also took basic computer assessments on Northstar Digital Literacy and learned about software and Microsoft Word.
Our class was delighted to know they were the first group to be trained on our new Microsoft Learning Hubs, which offers a more robust learning experience. They were also given a link to our Family Resource Guide, a list full of community and online resources to help them in STEM, education, career, digital literacy, and family. We are excited about the possibilities as we increase our space and allow even more families to join us.
One of our attendees, an administrator at RISE Schools, was thrilled to get this training at our Volunteer and Training Center. We look forward to conducting our Family Learning Workshop at RISE soon and the many others we have planned for our community this year.
